Brussels’ famous Manneken-Pis statue donned an outfit created using the modrotisk printing technique on Wednesday (20 October 2020) as some sort of weird tribute to the Czech Republic.
Known as modrotlač in Slovakia, blaudruck in the German-speaking world, and kékfestés in Hungary, this traditional Central European technique is the “practice of printing a dye-resistant paste onto a cloth before dyeing over it with indigo dye,” according to the UNESCO website.
In 2018, modrotisk was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — one of the world’s most prestigious lists of intangible things.
